49ers and Brandon Aiyuk have finalized a four-year, $120 million contract extension.

Sources indicate that the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk have finalized a four-year, $120 million contract extension.

49ers and Brandon Aiyuk Finalize Major Contract Extension

The high-stakes contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have reached a pivotal resolution, concluding with a significant long-term commitment. On Thursday, the 49ers and Aiyuk finalized a four-year, $120 million extension, keeping him in San Francisco through the 2028 season. ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the news, revealing that the terms of the new deal closely mirror the initial offer made by the 49ers on August 12.

Key Terms of the Extension

The agreement includes $76 million guaranteed, with $47 million set to be paid to Aiyuk before April 1, 2025. This deal positions Aiyuk among the top earners in the NFL, placing him alongside Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill as the fifth-highest-paid receiver, with an impressive average annual value of $30 million per season.

Negotiation Tensions and Resolution

The extension follows a period of heightened tension. On Wednesday, the 49ers had publicly declared Aiyuk's health, with coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch expressing their expectation for him to participate in practice. However, Aiyuk missed both Wednesday and Thursday practices, which raised concerns about potential team discipline.

Despite these issues, the new deal, finalized on Thursday, allows Aiyuk to focus on preparing for the season opener against the New York Jets on September 9.

Trade Requests and Negotiation Challenges

The road to this agreement was not without its hurdles. Nearly two years of negotiations were marked by skepticism, especially after Aiyuk requested a trade on July 23, just before the start of training camp. This request sparked serious trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots. For a trade to materialize, any interested team would need to meet both the 49ers' and Aiyuk's substantial contract demands. While these teams were capable of meeting one of the criteria, none could fulfill both, leading the Niners and Aiyuk back to the negotiating table.

Impact on the 49ers and Future Outlook

With Aiyuk secured, the 49ers not only retain their top receiver but also maintain a core offensive group alongside quarterback Brock Purdy for the next five years. In the 2023 season, Aiyuk had a standout year, leading the Niners with 1,342 receiving yards and ranking ninth in the NFL for receiving yards per game (83.9). He also ranked second in yards per reception (17.9) and first in yards per target (12.9), earning a second-team All-Pro selection.

His return allows the 49ers to potentially keep the same starting offensive lineup as last year, with Aiyuk joining forces with fellow wideouts Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings, while rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing continue to develop.

As the 49ers set their sights on securing their sixth Lombardi Trophy, Aiyuk's presence is a crucial component in their quest for NFL dominance.

Botic van de Zandschulp pulled off a major upset, defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.

Botic van de Zandschulp pulled off a major upset, defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.

Carlos Alcaraz Stunned in Early US Open Exit: A Closer Look

In a surprising turn of events at the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz, a heavy favorite to clinch the title, faced an early exit from the tournament. The top seed, who had been on a remarkable run this summer, struggled to find his footing against Botic van de Zandschulp, a 28-year-old from the Netherlands, resulting in a defeat that left many spectators and analysts stunned.

The Unexpected Upset

Alcaraz, who had been a dominant force in tennis this year with wins at both the French Open and Wimbledon, and a silver medal at the Olympics, entered the US Open with high expectations. However, he was upset by Van de Zandschulp in a match that saw Alcaraz’s internal struggles become as evident as his external battle against his lower-ranked opponent.

Match Breakdown

From the outset, it was clear that Alcaraz was struggling to find his rhythm. Van de Zandschulp dominated the first set, taking advantage of Alcaraz’s offensive struggles. Despite a valiant effort to rally in the third set, fueled in part by a double fault from Van de Zandschulp, Alcaraz's errors allowed his opponent to maintain control and ultimately secure the win.

Alcaraz's frustration was palpable as he gestured to his head, signaling his mental confusion to his coach. The mental toll of his demanding summer schedule seemed to weigh heavily on him, contributing to his unexpected early exit.

Van de Zandschulp's Victory

For Van de Zandschulp, the win was a significant breakthrough. Known for his strong net play, he utilized this strength to outmaneuver Alcaraz throughout the match. Despite acknowledging his nerves, Van de Zandschulp emphasized the importance of staying calm when facing top players like Alcaraz.

A Rare Early Exit

Alcaraz’s early departure from the US Open marks a rare instance for a top-seeded player. Since the retirement of Patrick Rafter in 1999, this early loss is considered one of the most surprising upsets involving a top favorite. Historically, Alcaraz had maintained a strong record against lower-ranked opponents in Grand Slam tournaments, making this early exit even more unexpected.

Reflections and Future Outlook

Alcaraz’s grueling summer schedule, including his intense matches and the emotional toll of his Olympic silver medal loss to Novak Djokovic, may have contributed to his fatigue. This early exit prompts a reflection on whether his busy season impacted his performance at the US Open.

As the tennis world digests this surprising result, Alcaraz will undoubtedly regroup and strategize for future tournaments. Meanwhile, Van de Zandschulp’s victory stands out as a testament to the unpredictable nature of the sport and the emerging talent ready to make their mark.

Colorado has undeniable talent, but they still have much to prove.

Colorado has undeniable talent, but they still have much to prove.

Minutes after North Dakota State’s Hail Mary attempt fell just 4 yards short of an unlikely upset, Colorado coach Deion Sanders faced the postgame press with a mix of relief and contemplation. "You ever felt like you won, but you didn’t win?" Sanders mused, capturing the complex emotions of the night. Despite securing a 31-26 victory, the Buffaloes’ performance left many fans with a sense of déjà vu.

A Victory That Feels Like Déjà Vu

While Colorado emerged victorious, their display on the field felt reminiscent of last year’s underwhelming performances. Despite executing some impressive plays, the win against a lower-division opponent didn’t deliver the dominant showing many had hoped for, sparking doubts about the team’s potential for significant improvement this season.

Standout Performances

In the midst of the unease, there were standout performances that showcased the potential of Colorado’s top players. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is being touted as a potential top-5 NFL draft pick, threw for 445 yards, completing 26 of 34 passes. His performance was highlighted by three touchdown throws to two-way standout Travis Hunter. Hunter, who proved to be a formidable challenge for North Dakota State’s secondary, ended the game with seven receptions for 132 yards.

Sanders noted the presence of NFL scouts, commenting, "I think 31 NFL scouts showed up tonight and saw what they came for. So, let’s move on from here. I’m going to do my best to keep my frustration in check, but we got the win."

Reflecting on Last Year’s Season Opener

Sanders’ optimism about his team’s potential grew as he spoke, though it stood in stark contrast to last year’s season opener against TCU. After that game, Sanders famously asked, "Do you believe now?"—a question that had many believing the Buffaloes were on the brink of a conference title contention.

A year later, the excitement from the TCU game feels distant, and it may be premature to draw definitive conclusions about the season’s potential based on just one game. Colorado’s narrow victory against North Dakota State leaves fans and analysts pondering whether this team is truly poised for a breakthrough or if they’ll continue to grapple with inconsistencies.

Looking Ahead

As the Buffaloes move forward, the focus will be on building upon the positive aspects of their performance while addressing the areas that fell short. Sanders’ mixed emotions reflect the broader sentiment of hope tempered by caution. The road ahead will reveal whether Colorado can translate their individual talent into a cohesive, dominant force capable of meeting the high expectations set for them.

British Olympic sport shines brilliantly following the remarkable Paris Games.

As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games draw to a close, Dame Katherine Grainger and Dr. Kate Baker look back on the performances over the past 16 days.

Dame Katherine Grainger, Chair of UK Sport, expressed her immense pride in the performance of British athletes at the Paris Olympics, highlighting the hard work and dedication that led them to the top of their sport. She celebrated their contribution to Great Britain’s ongoing Olympic success, a story marked by consistent excellence in the era funded by The National Lottery.

Grainger emphasized the inspiration these athletes have provided to the nation, and while the Olympic events have concluded, she is eager to see how these athletes will leverage their platforms to positively impact society. She underscored the unifying power of sport and noted that many athletes are eager to engage more deeply in their communities through the ChangeMaker initiative launching next week.

Grainger also expressed her anticipation for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris, confident that the success of Team GB will energize ParalympicsGB athletes.

Reflecting on the highlights of the Games, Dr. Kate Baker, UK Sport’s Director of Performance, noted the impressive achievement of winning over 60 medals for the fourth consecutive Games—a feat matched only by the US and China. She credited the athletes' success to the robust support system provided by the high-performance community, long-term funding from the government, and The National Lottery, which has allowed for strategic planning, talent development, and the retention of world-class coaches and practitioners.

Baker celebrated the diversity of sports represented and the significant milestones achieved by Team GB, with medals won across 18 different sports. She highlighted the inspiring performances over the 16 days, including those of nine mothers competing for Team GB, seven of whom secured medals, marking a pivotal moment for women’s sport.

She also praised the historic achievements in diving, with Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen earning the first female diving medal since 1960, and the Artistic Swimming duo Isabelle Thorpe and Kate Shortman securing the first-ever medal in their discipline. Baker acknowledged the strong performances in traditional sports like cycling, athletics, equestrian events, and rowing, as well as the mix of seasoned athletes and emerging talent who brought home medals.

Baker also paid tribute to the behind-the-scenes contributors—coaches, medical teams, and support staff—whose efforts have been crucial to the athletes’ success. As attention shifts to the upcoming Paralympic Games and future Olympic endeavors in Los Angeles 2028, she expressed optimism about the continued brilliance of British Olympic sport.

Get ready to "Find Your Greatness" as the UK begins its quest for its future athletes.

The hunt for the next wave of UK athletes has officially begun, as the country celebrates Team GB's incredible achievement at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where they won over 60 medals for the fourth straight games.

The goal of UK Sport's "Find Your Greatness" initiative is to find potential Team GB or Paralympics GB athletes from all throughout the country.

Applications are now being accepted through October 14, 2024, and are aimed at athletic, active 16–24-year-old UK citizens, including those with physical, visual, or intellectual disabilities. With 39% of British adults between the ages of 18 and 24 believing they may compete for Great Britain in LA in 2028, there is a chance for some of those ambitions to come true.

Young athletes in skeleton, cycling (track, mountain biking, BMX freestyle, and BMX racing), rowing, modern pentathlon, weightlifting, climbing, shooting, volleyball, handball, and all para sports are sought after by the campaign.

Numerous Olympic and Paralympic success stories, including rowing champion Helen Glover, skeleton gold medalist Lizzy Yarnold, taekwondo silver medalist Lauren Williams, and double Paralympic champion Emma Wiggs in paracanoe, have resulted from previous UK Sport athlete recruitment campaigns.

British athletes from the past and present, such as Nathan Hales, Erin McNeice, Rhianna Parris-Smith, and Emily Muskett, who have either participated in athlete recruitment programs themselves or are currently competing in the sports featured in Find Your Greatness, shared their stories of how their aspirations of becoming Olympians or Paralympians came true at the launch event, which was held at Graystone Action Sports in Salford.

Olympic sports will have regional testing in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, and Swansea in October, November, and December. Paralympic sports will have regional testing in Crawley in October, Sheffield in November, and Liverpool in February.

The Chair of UK Sport, Dame Grainger, said: "I've been lucky to see firsthand how athlete recruiting efforts can help identify future stars while also providing participants with a broader range of benefits and skill sets.

"The UK is a successful Olympic and Paralympic nation, and we are able to maintain our relevance on the international scene by running athlete recruitment campaigns such as Find Your Greatness." campaign strikes close to home, giving kids the chance to participate in sports they would not have otherwise had, and inspiring educators, coaches, and mentors to spot exceptional talent. They truly have the opportunity to serve as the young people's inspiration to apply.

"I'm excited to watch the talent that this campaign reveals and to accompany them on their ascent to fame. We hope that individuals will have the motivation and self-assurance to put themselves out there and discover exactly how far they can go since there is so much potential out there.

"Team GB and ParalympicsGB performances this summer will no doubt help inspire young people to take up sport, and this Government is working to improve opportunities so that our emerging talent has the best chance to succeed wherever they are from," stated Stephanie Peacock, Minister of Sport, Civil Society, and Youth.

"The future of sport in our country depends on developing new, accessible pathways to increase participation. UK Sport's Find Your Greatness program is a great opportunity for the next generation to try new sports and see if they can become the next Jonnie Peacock or Keely Hodgkinson."

Ellie Aldridge, the Olympic gold medallist in formula kite at Paris 2024, continued, saying, "Athlete recruitment programs like Find Your Greatness have been instrumental in my success." I had no idea what career route I would be taking when I applied in 2018. Here I am now, having attained gold in Paris 2024.

Every athlete has a unique route; you never know where you can end up or how far you might go in six years if you never take the risk. However, if you never take that leap of faith, you might never find out. You can learn so much about yourself and your potential from competing in an Olympics, even if you don't place on the podium.

"I think those who think they have the potential or know others who do, should just go for it! I couldn't recommend this program more!"

"Our experience tells us there are people out there with the potential to be Olympic or Paralympic champions, but they may not have had the opportunity to connect with the right sport or have the necessary support network to succeed," said Natalie Dunman, the director of performance for British skeleton.

"The main goal of Find Your Greatness is to provide young people with undeveloped athletic ability with the chance to realize their full potential.

"We're thrilled to be involved in the launch of Find Your Greatness - Through initiatives like this, British Skeleton has discovered Olympic and World Champions. We are confident that the next great sports talent in Britain exists, and we eagerly await the chance to assist these people in taking the first step toward qualifying for the Olympics.

What PM Narendra Modi Said About Vinesh Phogat's Paris Olympics 2024 Feat: "Matter Of Great Pride"

Vinesh was disqualified before to her final because she weighed more than the allowed 100 grams, hence she was unable to compete for a medal in the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat received a tonne of accolades from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her remarkable performance at the Olympics in Paris and for becoming the first female grappler from India to go to the final. On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a meeting and reception for Indian athletes and gold winners from the just finished Paris Olympics at his house located at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in the capital city. PM Modi mentioned Vinesh's accomplishment and remarked, "Vinesh became the first Indian (women) to reach the finals in wrestling, which is a matter of great pride for all of us," when speaking with the Indian delegation to the Olympics in Paris. (Expert Kabaddi Sale)

When Vinesh was weighed "few grams over" the allowed limits on the morning of the final match, she was disqualified from the women's 50 kg gold medal battle at the Olympics in Paris, putting an end to her remarkable achievement.

Vinesh announced her intention to withdraw from wrestling on social media following the devastating event at the large sports venue.

The wrestler from Haryana has won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, two bronze medals at the World Championships, and one gold medal at the Asian Games. In 2021, she was also named Asian champion.

She did, however, file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) challenging her exclusion from the Olympics and requested a shared silver medal in the 50 kg weight class.

Yet Vinesh's hopes of winning her first Olympic gold were dashed when the Ad-Hoc Division of the CAS rejected her appeal against her disqualification.

At the Olympics in Paris, India won six medals—one silver and five bronze. While expectations were high for a historic performance, the nation just missed out on breaking its own record at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when they finished 48th with seven medals (1 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze).

Raygun calls the criticism of the Olympics "devastating."

Rachael Gunn, an Australian breakdancer, describes the reaction to her Olympic performance as "devastating".

As Gunn, also known as B-girl Raygun, made her debut at the Paris Games last week, she instantly became the talk of social media.

More than 54,000 individuals have signed a petition seeking an apology from the 36-year-old Gunn and Australian Olympic chef de mission Anna Meares.Gunn said she was worried that her looks would "open the door to so much hate" in an Instagram video.

Matt Carroll, the chief executive of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), stated on Thursday that the petition was "vexatious, misleading, and bullying," and that it had "stirred up public hatred without any factual basis."A two-time Olympic champion track cyclist Meares and Gunn are accused in the petition of "attempting to gaslight the public and undermining the efforts of genuine athletes" and should apologize.

"I really appreciated the positivity and I'm glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives—that's what I hoped," Gunn added, thanking her followers.

"Well, I did take it very seriously and I had a great time out there. I put in a ton of effort and gave it everything I had to prepare for the Olympics. Really.

"And I’m honoured to have been a part of the Australian Olympic team; to be a part of breaking’s Olympic debut."

Sydney university instructor Gunn was defeated by a total score of 54-0 in all three of her round-robin matches.

She retaliated, though, adding, "Here's a fun truth for you: breaking really doesn't have any purpose.

"If you want to see how the judges scored me compared to my opponents, you can actually see the comparison percentages across the five criteria on Olympics.com, external - all the results are there."

Carroll said that Gunn was "selected through a transparent and independent qualification event and nomination process," therefore she also questioned her detractors "in regard to the allegations and misinformation floating around."

"Please, please, please stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian breaking community, and the larger street dance community," Gunn continued.
"I beg you to kindly respect everyone's privacy since they have all gone through a lot as a result of this.

Olympics: Sanjay Singh holds wrestler protestors accountable for India's lackluster performance

According to WFI President Sanjay Singh, wrestlers in India were not given enough time to train for the quadrennial competition, which prevented them from winning many medals.

In Short

  • India won only 1 medal in wrestling in the Paris Olympics
  • Vinesh Phogat was a part of the wrestlers’ protests
  • India had sent a 6-member contingent in wrestling for Paris 2024

The WFI president, Sanjay Singh, stated that the wrestlers' protest was the main cause of India's inability to bring home enough medals from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Only Aman Sehrawat, who placed third in the men's 57kg division, made it to the podium out of the six members of India's delegation. In the third-place playoff, Sehrawat, 21, defeated Darian Cruz, of Puerto Rico.

Singh, who succeeded Brij Bhushan Singh as WFI chairman last December, said that because of the tensions brought on by the demonstrations, which lasted for over a year, the wrestlers were unable to have adequate time to train for the main event.

"When you see it from a different perspective, the whole wrestling community was disrupted by the demonstrations that lasted for 14–15 months. The wrestlers in other categories also suffered since they were unable to train in the absence of national and international competitions. According to Sanjay Singh, India Today, "the wrestlers could not perform well as a result."
Beginning in January 2023, rallies against Brij Bhushan included Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik. Sakshi, the first female Olympic wrestler from India, withdrew last year after Sanjay Singh overtook Brij Bhushan in the top spot.

Vinesh Phogat's fate hangs in balance

Vinesh competed in the women's 50kg division at the Olympics, although it is still unclear if she will take home a medal. The 29-year-old had made history by being the first Indian woman to advance to an Olympic wrestling final, but she was later disqualified when it was discovered that her weight at the weigh-ins was 100 grams over the allowed limit. In the meantime, amid the uproar, Vinesh also announced his retirement from wrestling.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has not yet rendered a decision in response to Vinesh's plea to keep her silver medal. The remaining wrestlers, Anshu Malik (57 kg), Reetika Hooda (76 kg), Nisha Dahiya (68 kg), and Antim Panghal (53 kg), aside from Vinesh and Aman, were unable to leave an impression.

Imane Khelif includes Elon Musk and JK Rowling in a cyberbullying lawsuit, highlighting their online posts.

Algerian boxer and Olympic champion Imane Khelif has named Elon Musk and JK Rowling in a cyberbullying lawsuit

Imane Khelif Files Cyberbullying Lawsuit Against Elon Musk and JK Rowling

Algerian boxer and Olympic champion Imane Khelif has taken legal action against high-profile figures Elon Musk and JK Rowling, filing a cyberbullying lawsuit that has drawn significant attention. According to Variety, Khelif’s criminal complaint, submitted to French authorities, accuses both Musk and Rowling of "aggravated cyber harassment."

The lawsuit stems from the online abuse Khelif endured during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite the controversy surrounding her participation, Khelif went on to win gold in the 66 kg division. The athlete faced allegations of failing a gender test at a 2023 International Boxing Association event, which fueled the online backlash.

The situation escalated during Khelif’s bout against Italian opponent Angela Carini. Carini, visibly upset after being struck twice by Khelif, ended the match abruptly after just 46 seconds, expressing her frustration and calling the situation "unjust." Khelif's subsequent victory was overshadowed by a flood of online hate, with accusations targeting her gender identity.

Notable Reactions

The controversy attracted notable reactions from prominent figures, including JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. Rowling publicly criticized Khelif’s participation, alleging that Khelif, described as a man in her statements, had unfairly impacted Carini. Rowling's comments included harsh criticism of the event’s management and its impact on women’s sports.

In her remarks, Rowling stated, "A young female boxer has just had everything she’s worked and trained for snatched away because you allowed a male to get in the ring with her. You’re a disgrace, your ‘safeguarding’ is a joke, and #Paris24 will be forever tarnished by the brutal injustice done to Carini."

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, also weighed in on the issue, tweeting, "men don’t belong in women’s sports." His comment further fueled the heated debate surrounding the controversy.

Legal Implications

Khelif’s lawsuit accuses Musk and Rowling of cyberbullying, reflecting a broader discourse on the intersection of gender, sports, and online harassment. The case highlights the impact of public figures’ statements on individuals and the legal boundaries of online conduct.

Looking Forward

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case will likely continue to generate significant media attention and public debate. Khelif’s lawsuit underscores the ongoing challenges athletes face in navigating public scrutiny and online harassment, especially in highly charged and controversial situations.

Live Updates on the Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict: Tonight, CAS will render a decision regarding Vinesh Phogat's appeal.

Disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Olympics: The Indian sports community anxiously awaited the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) decision on Tuesday regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the Olympics in Paris, having heard arguments from all sides.

Vinesh, who last Tuesday easily defeated Yui Susaki of Japan in the women's 50kg freestyle final, was disqualified from the gold medal match against eventual winner Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States after it was discovered that she weighed 100 grams more than the allowed amount during the morning weigh-in.

Startled by the surprising turn of events, the defeated wrestler filed an appeal at the CAS last Wednesday, demanding a joint silver medal with Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, a Cuban wrestler who had lost to Vinesh but advanced to the final after the Indian wrestler was disqualified.

Sports icons from all over the world supported the 29-year-old wrestler who was competing in her third Olympic Games, Vinesh, stating she doesn't have the strength to continue. Vinesh announced her retirement from the sport a day after her heartbreaking disqualification.
